I was somewhat distracted in reading through this passage by what happened at our house this past weekend. Our daughter's boyfriend of the last few years came for the weekend with the purpose of asking my husband Bill for permission to marry our daughter. We like him very much, and he's very good to Elizabeth, a very responsible guy, etc. etc........BUT, he is not a believer. Bill explained this concern to him, but Dan truly does not understand, because he is in darkness. As John tells us, without the light of Christ there is no understanding or recognizing the ONLY source of light. We can talk to Dan till the cows come home, and until God chooses to reveal his son to him, it will mean nothing. He is a good man, but as this passage tells us, we are not under the law anymore; now salvation is through grace and truth. Elizabeth does not want to live her life without him, and she is praying that God will open his heart to Christ, and is living with that hope. It's a risky thing, and we are obviously very concerned. It would be awesome if any of you could pray for Dan if he comes to mind, that he will see his need, and that God would touch his heart and bring him from darkness to light.
